bolda (볼다)

Bolda is a word in the Jeju dialect for the calm that comes when the waves and wind settle. The house stands in Bukchon-ri, on Jeju’s north coast, facing a quiet bay where the tide comes in and goes out twice a day. At high tide, the house seems to float on the water. At low tide, a tidal flat appears, where sea creatures and birds gather.

Twice a day, the rhythm of the sea

The tide in front of the house comes in and goes out twice a day. When it recedes, sea creatures remain, and ducks and other birds come to feed. bolda was designed to bring the rhythms and scenery of this place into the house.

A house above the stone walls

Designed and built by an architect, bolda reflects years of careful thought about guests’ comfort.

Stone walls follow the course of Hwanhaejangseong, the old coastal walls that have long protected Jeju. Stone walls stand on the rocky shore, with the house beside them. Stone, plastered walls and roof form three horizontal lines, connecting the house naturally with the fishing village of Bukchon-ri.

From inside, the view leads towards the sea, stone walls and Jeju’s native plants. Walls and openings repeat through the interior, framing the sea through one window and then another.

Two spaces, together and apart

bolda has two spaces, Duplex and Skip Floor, so families and groups can gather while still enjoying time of their own.

The 115 m² Duplex spans the ground floor and upstairs, allowing members of your group to stay on separate floors. The 50 m² Skip Floor was designed around half-level changes and a loft. You can book either space separately or both together for up to 12 guests.

The two spaces connect indoors. Their separate outdoor entrances are about 20 m apart, with independent access routes that do not cross.

I liked hearing music and noticing a lovely fragrance as soon as I walked in.
